Today, December 13, remembers one of the best known and most venerated saints in our country: Saint Lucia. Lucia was a martyr for the love of Christ and remain faithful to her vow of chastity, renunciation of his eyes. An example of deep love that many of us still do not understand why people think that loving Jesus is a matter of course, and then not ever give it importance. ucia was born around the year 283 AD , in Syracuse, a noble Christian family. Lucia's father, who perhaps was called Lucius, died when she was still very small, so was raised by mother Eutichia from whom he learned the truth of Christianity and the message of Jesus was so that Lucia knew the stories of the early Christians , their martyrdom for the love of Jesus and, thus growing in his heart, he decided to devote himself to perpetual vow of virginity.
Lucia, worried about the worsening of the disease that had struck the mother, a hemorrhage considered incurable, suggested the pilgrimage to the tomb of the martyr St. Agatha in Catania, because the fame of the glorious santa had spread everywhere, thanks to the miracles made by her, in her heart she was sure that Lucy would be beneficial also to his dear mother. Eutichia accepted hopeful exhortation Lucia and so decided to go on pilgrimage to reach Catania, where arrived on the day of the feast of St. Agatha: February 5 was 301. During the celebration felt the passage of the Gospel of Matthew concerning the story of the woman who suffered from bleeding and healed by touching Jesus' cloak Lucia, enlightened, he proposed to her mother to touch the tomb of St. Agatha convinced of the powerful intercession of the Holy . While Eutichia touched the tomb, appeared in a vision to St. Lucia Agata said that " Lucia, my sister, why are you asking me yourself what you can get for your mother? Your mother is already healed by your faith . Lucy told her mother: " the intercession of St. Agata, Jesus has healed you " and, thinking that this was the right time, revealed to her mother's intention to devote himself to Jesus, and to donate her rich dowry to the poor: Eutichia agreed even if forced.
A young man charged in his city, in love with Lucy, disappointed at the lack of marriage, as Lucy explained that she was dedicated to Jesus, retaliated angrily, denouncing it as a follower of Christ, the Roman prefect Pascasio terrible. The emperor Diocletian issued an edict which provided a fierce repression against Christians.
Lucia was arrested and brought before the prefect Pascasio, who ordered her to make sacrifices to the pagan gods to renounce their Christian faith, but Lucia opposed a firm refusal. Pascasio realized that would not have achieved anything and then ordered that she be brought in the worst slums of the city, meaning that violence was used. The soldiers grabbed her away, but though bound hand and foot and pulled by six men and six oxen, could not move; Lucia inexplicably remained solid as a rock.
Pascasio thought that this was the work of magic and wonder, infuriatosi, ordered him to be treated as a witch was then covered with resin and pitch and given to the fire but the flames were burning. Lucy told Pascasio: " I begged my Lord Jesus Christ, that this fire is harassing me to give to believers the courage of martyrdom ... "

Lucia was killed on December 13 of the 304 and was buried in 313 in the same place where it was built a shrine dedicated to her.
In 1039 the Byzantine general George Maniace moved the body of S. Lucia from Syracuse to Constantinople, to avoid the danger of invasion of Syracuse by the Saracens.
In 1204, during the fourth crusade, the doge of Venice, Enrico Dandolo, located in Istanbul the remains of the saint, the door to the monastery of San Giorgio in Venice in 1280 and the transfer is in the church dedicated to her in Venice.
